As an Alabamian who has lived in both Florida and South Carolina, and has been through Ohio, I feel this map is accurate. Though I don’t understand the lack of Ohio hate.

I’m in Alabama, and tbh I don’t really think about Florida all that much.
edit: To be fair, I’m in north Alabama, like 10 mins from the TN line.

Cali is hated because of the idiot transplants buying up property and fucking everything up for the long term residents.

Ohio flies under the radar because they don't espouse/export a culture that fucks up the neighboring states.

Idaho will be bullying Nevada into enforcing its border with California in order to keep us out. Seriously though, the California hating is peopled also by people who fled California and now resent others their desire to to likewise flee California. The irony is exquisite.

Fun fact: in Canada, the answers would always be Ontario , Quebec, or both!

PNWer can confirm the Cali-hate. Kind of amusing, as so many in the PNW are from California, no doubt some of the haters, and they seem to import what they hate about CA to their new home.

Virginia isn’t really accurate. Most of the hate is reserved for NY/NJ for similar reasons to the California haters, or towards either NoVA or not-NoVA, depending where you live in the state. We don’t think about WV that much.

I’m from Washington don’t hate California. In fact, I quite like a lot of it, and have spent about a quarter of my life in it. But I do understand why a lot of people here hate California transplants or at least the volume thereof, and can see why that might be confused for hating California itself.
Meanwhile, I’ve been to 40 states plus DC and Puerto Rico (plus six provinces!) and lived in four, and while I certainly have something of a mental ranking even my least favorites have some redeeming qualities. A few. Maybe.

Makes sense. Much of Utah’s power, water, pollution and population woes are thanks to California.

That’s only true if you believe that Ohio is the way it is because it combines the worst traits of western Pennsylvania, eastern Kentucky, southeastern Michigan, and southern Indiana, and frankly, I think Occam’s Razor suggests that Ohio bears some of the blame.

![]() 01/29/2020 at 18:24 |

The weird thing about that is that for several years the biggest source of transplants to Washington were, like, Michigan and Illinois, and I don’t see any of the same hate. Especially weird since like 9/10 of the transplants from California were themselves previously transplants to California.

These really depend on what part of the state you’re in. You’re not going to hate a state that’s on the totally opposite side of your state as you. The other bordering states nearer to you are going to be drawing your ire. Familiarity breeds contempt, as they say.

The non-dangerous ones are so damn entertaining. Like Flat Earthers, but with more crazy bumper stickers and no license plates. Trouble is, you don’t know which ones to laugh at and which ones to run away from until you get too far into the conversation to do the latter.

And Delaware, mainly in the summer when the whole state’s inadequate road/highway network gets totally jammed up with NJ drivers heading down to or coming back from Rehoboth Beach and Lewes. Its great for the economy in Sussex, but the rest of the state really can’t handle the through traffic volume well and people spend months bitching and complaining about how long it now takes to get to work or run errands.
Also, I think its kind of weird how all of Pennsylvania and New York rush to the NJ beaches at the same time everyone from NJ is running south to Delaware and Maryland. Its like the major population centers of the Northeast just temporarily shift themselves every year.
![]() 01/29/2020 at 23:24 |

Yeah, but that’s just Austin, not Texas as a whole. If Austin were polled individually as to who they hated most they’d probably say Texas

“The rent is too damn high, the traffic sucks donkey balls and the sprawl is miserable!” - Californians escaping California, who then proceed to jack up real estate prices, increase gridlock and contribute to the deforestation of the PNW to build more boring, overpriced beige houses.

They hate us because we know they’re just western Canada, and not actually bigger than us. They’ll be the little guy when their tundra melts into the ocean thanks in part to Texas’ depressing refusal to acknowledge that we’re wrecking the environment.

It’s pretty bad. The interstate highways are a depressing, slow slog to get through, and I’ve never been more confused by a foodstuff before than I was by Skyline Chili.
![]() 02/06/2020 at 16:04 |

They’ve cut quite a swath in Idaho, too. Where they are quite despised. At least in the previous waves they had the decency to change license plates... Now? Notsomuch? Why you’d live in Idaho for years, while keeping CA plates— and the need to SMOG the car at great cost— is beyond my comprehension. Maybe to communicate “hey I’m a cool Californian”? I dunno. Mostly they come across as fish-out-of-water.
About 15% boomerang back because of “the weather” or “the politics”. So, I guess it’s self-sorting.

LOL.
I really want to keep my current Texas plates if I have to move out of state, though. I have the Porsche Club of America plate with “PARSH” on the 944 and a Space Shuttle one on the Lancer where the extra custom plate fee goes to the various aviation/space-related activities and scholarships. They’re so good! I put up with that dumb default clip art-lookin’ plate on the Lancer for nearly a decade and just now got rid of it. Is this where I form a dumb LLC for my dumb cars, except in a state that’s not Montana?
Also, they’re not Oklahoma plates, but hard no on moving to Oklahoma anyway. [See map above as that part’s accurate.
